The initiative will kick off on Discord, a popular online communication platform, serving as the primary hub for the global community to unite and grow together. Together, we are launching a global “Community of Practice” centered around fungi innovation for food, agriculture, materials, and more. By connecting a diverse range of individuals and organizations all over the world, we can unlock the immense potential of fungi and accelerate its positive impact across various sectors. We are an affiliate of the North American Mycological Association and provide fungi identification tools and resources, forays, educational lectures, scavenger hunts, and other social get-togethers to appeal to beginners and experts alike.
We are dedicated to providing technical support and mentorship to passionate mycologists who are eager to embark on their own growing and personal projects. While many folks have dreamed of a locally grown mycofest, the Ohio Mushroom Festival was Vint’s brainchild. He carefully assembled the team of forays leaders, identifiers, presenters, vendors, and volunteers to ensure that all fungus fanatics were represented. In addition to the mushrooms on the relocated log, a nearby dead tree stump sprouted skillet quality mushrooms that yielded a plateful and made a successful and happy pothunter out of me. We had such a great time at last month’s Summer Foray, in spite of the dry weather – and since most areas have seen a good amount of rain in the last week, now’s a great time to get out into the woods! There are two mini forays happening this month, on August 10 in Hamilton County, and on August 17 in Lorain County.

Old apple trees and orchards and wild cherry trees can be productive. Some people swear by old iron, such as fences and even rusty farm implements. The morels commonly referred to as the greys, yellows, and whites are M. Cryptica; the two species cannot be separated by eye, but both are choice edibles. Diminutiva is a small light-colored morel, rare in my experience. Tomentosa are known from other areas, but might possibly be found in Ohio. The original art was commissioned from Cleveland-area artist Stefanie Verish. The Sturgeon’s amanita mushroom was first discovered in Ohio, and is named for author and OMS member Walt Sturgeon. The scarlet red color is reminiscent of Ohio’s state bird and state flower, the red carnation. Also in 1999, Mushroom Marketing launched and has provided music services for the likes of Coca-Cola, Telstra and McDonald’s.

However, the festival was well organized and ran quite smoothly overall, and guest feedback was impressively positive, which was reflective of the dedicated efforts of the volunteer staff. This particular species of a delicious oyster mushroom, native to Eastern Russian, Northern China, and Japan, is cultivated around the world and has escaped many times into the wild. The first recorded observation in the United States was in 2012 and since then it’s spread as rapidly as an invasive species. Because there had been no reported observation of this fungus by 2020 for Central Ohio, I sent photos to my mushroom guru, Walt Sturgeon, who confirmed the ID. Due to continuing drought conditions, the organizers and hosts of our two remaining mini forays have made the sad decision to cancel these events. We hope some of you are having more luck fungus-finding in other parts of the state.
AMS member contributions provide the support necessary to do this DNA sequencing to find out if the fungi here are similar to those in other areas or if they are unique to Arizona or our region. As a person who rarely finds morels during mushroom forays in springtime, I’m thrilled to have a tasty alternative in the Golden Oyster Mushroom. Easy to find, beautiful to look at, less frequently attacked by insects and slugs than our native species, and very tasty to boot, this species is a joy to find in our neck of the woods. Even when I am unable to harvest in nature preserves and metro parks, they are exciting to find because their beauty offers lovely photo opportunities.

I’ve watched them fruit at the same locations over a period of 5 years as well as several times a year. When conditions are right, I’ve harvested Golden Oysters from the same logs in May, June, July, and September. My preferred way to serve the tasty mushroom is simply sauteed aside seafood or pork tenderloin to avoid overpowering the delicious mild taste.
